York City agreed deal with Swindon Town defender

Jeff King, a defender for Swindon Town, is expected to join York City.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, the 28-year-old will leave Sky Bet League Two to join Adam Hinshelwood’s table-toppers.

It’s unclear, though, if he will be joining North Yorkshire permanently or on loan.

With a 5-3 victory over rivals Hartlepool on Saturday in front of over 7,500 fans, the Minstermen kept their position atop the Vanarama National League table. However, their promotion credentials will be truly tested this weekend when they travel to second-place Forest Green Rovers.

For the first time since 2016, King is someone who understands what it takes to get City back into the Football League.

After a successful trial, he joined Swindon on a free transfer in August after making 19 appearances as Chesterfield easily won the National League title the previous season, notably in the Minstermen’s unexpected 2-1 victory at the LNER Community Stadium in March.

The right-back earned a spot in the 2022–2023 National League Team of the Year after making more than 100 appearances for the Spireites in three seasons and scoring 13 goals.

King also played for Halifax Town in the National League, where he won both Player of the Season and Team of the Year in 2020–21.

Before taking a leave of absence due to a family tragedy, the set-piece specialist was a regular starter under Mark Kennedy. He has made eight appearances for Swindon this season.

Since then, he has only made one appearance for the Robins, beginning their October 1 1-1 tie at Tranmere.

With just 12 goals given up in their first 17 league games and nine clean sheets during that time, City has the National League’s strongest defence, even if they inexplicably gave up three goals against Hartlepool.

Since Thierry Latty-Fairweather was informed that he was not part of the club’s plans and would be returning to Maidenhead on loan until January, King would give Hinshelwood’s back line additional depth.

Additionally, the move might provide full-back Joe Felix greater versatility.

one of the team’s best players since joining from Worthing in the summer, capable of playing on the left side of defence when necessary.
