Another take over in Sheffield Wednesday

SHEFFIELD, NEW Head coach Danny Röhl of Wednesday has spent a great deal of time researching the players he will be taking over for before ever meeting them.

that arrives at the Owls’ Middlewood Road training facility on Monday. Despite hours of research, the German knows that he will never truly understand them unless he sees them with his own eyes and interacts with and instructs them.

He made the following observation: “It was critical to gather a great deal of player data.

“I kept a lot of notes and watched a lot of matches. How

ever, it is crucial to assess the situation on the ground to determine what works well and what needs improvement.

“These are things that will bring us all together, we’ll make a list and with my staff, we will decide what is the most important for each player.”

After seeing every Wednesday game in 2023–24 thus far, Röhl acknowledges that, in terms of formulating a plan to turn the team’s fortunes around after a dismal s

tart to the season, he will be practical rather than autocratic.

“I have watched every match from this season,” stated the former assistant for Southampton, Bayern Munich, and Germany, who will start his Owls career at Watford on Saturday.

“The two matches have been extremely dissimilar. In contrast to previous matches, when we have not seen as much energy, the most recent one against Huddersfield saw us get off to a strong start. It hasn’t been easy.

“I have to work on my conditioning to sense what the players are now comfortable with on the pitch.

“It is not about coming in and saying ‘You have to do this’, it is about taking the strengths of the squad and then bringing my style in as a combination.”
