The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore issued a notice that it is forbidden to “boondock,” or camp in an isolated area without access to electricity, water, or sewage. Five Sleeping Bear campgrounds are open until the fall, they reminded campers. Reservations for campgrounds are accepted from December 1 through May 15 up to six months in advance. The end of summer may have you wanting to run away from responsibilities and hide in the woods, but Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore warns against going fully off the grid.
The national park posted a warning on social media that “boondocking,” or camping in a remote location without access to any water, sewer or electricity, is prohibited along the national lakeshore.
That includes off-trail camping and overnight parking with the intention to sleep in your car.
Campgrounds can be booked up to six months in advance from December 1 – May 15. Outside of that season campsites are first come, first served.
