Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl may have just one thing on his wishlist for the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl spoke to the press on Thursday ahead of his side’s Championship clash against Cardiff City.
It’s the first of nine games standing between the Owls and the January transfer window, though how busy a window it’ll be remains to be seen.
At the end of October, Sheffield Wednesday were placed under registration embargo, having since been lifted out of it.
Though there remains huge doubts about the club’s resources ahead of January, with Dejphon Chansiri having experienced a new wave of criticism from supporters in the last few weeks.
Speaking earlier in the season, Rohl said Sheffield Wednesday could focus on loan signings in January, and he’s now echoed that idea with some comments in his pre-Cardiff presser.
Danny Rohl makes loan signings claim at Sheffield Wednesday
Arsenal have been linked with Shea Charles ahead of the Cardiff City game. It’s reported that the Gunners are keeping tabs on the Southampton loan man who’s impressing at Sheffield Wednesday.
Rohl discussed the rumoured interest in Charles, then explaining how he still needs quality loan signings to add the finishing touches to his side.
The Owls boss said: “We needed players like that [Charles] from the Premier League to improve our squad. I don’t just need to convince the players, but I need the full package.
“I need good players on loan to increase our squad and help our levels. To win more games, the important games, the close games… to get them on your side, you need high-end quality in phases of the game, and we need to work on that.”
With permanent signings looking unlikely in January, Chansiri will surely gift Rohl some funding for loan players.
Danny Rohl’s ‘dream scenario’ in the January transfer window
It’s clear that Sheffield Wednesday need some new blood in January, and it also seems clear that loan signings will again be the focus, as it was in the last January transfer window.
Posting on X earlier in November, journalist Dom Howson said what he thinks Rohl’s ‘dream’ January transfer window would look like.
Howson says Rohl needs a new spine: a centre-back, a central midfielder and a striker. A new central midfielder could be vital if the Owls do eventually lose Charles.
Southampton currently have no intentions of recalling Charles in January, though the situation could quickly change if a player is injured at St Mary’s, or there’s a change in manager.
Expect Rohl and head of recruitment Kevin Beadell to have a long list of potential players they could sign on loan in January, and if they can add two or three then it could have a similar impact to what last January’s loan signings had.
