For a club-record £350,000 in September 2014, Clarke-Harris first joined Rotherham from Oldham Athletic. However, he struggled to establish himself at the New York Stadium and spent time on loan at MK Dons and Doncaster Rovers in 2015.
The striker finally made a name for himself in the team, but injuries kept him from playing at his peak while wearing a Millers shirt. In January 2018, he signed a loan contract to Coventry, which he made permanent that summer.
Clarke-Harris became one of League One’s most productive attackers after leaving Rotherham. During his tenure at Peterborough United, he was awarded the Golden Boot twice: once in 2020–21 for his 31 league goals, and again in 2022–23 for his 26 goals this season.
It appears that the Millers realised their error in letting Clarke-Harris leave, and he signed a two-year contract in May, becoming the team’s first summer addition. Manager Steve Evans then named him captain.
Rotherham United fan pundit outlines Jonson Clarke-Harris transfer regret
Tom Eyre, a Rotherham United supporter on FLW, acknowledged that he was annoyed that the Millers approved Clarke-Harris’ departure at a time when they were in dire need of a prolific goal scorer when asked which player he thought the club sold too early.
“A couple spring to mind when I talk about players that we sold early,” Tom replied.
One player who comes to mind is Jerry Yates, who we sold to Blackpool and went on to achieve great success there.
However, many fans would concur that Jonson Clarke-Harris is the primary one.
“He’s obviously back at the club now, but he was Bristol Rovers’ leading scorer after we let him go
“Everywhere he went, he scored goals, and he was the League One Golden Boot winner consistently.
“At that time, we needed a goalscorer, obviously Michael Smith and Freddie Ladapo came in and did well, but around the time we needed a goalscorer, we let him go.
“I would have to say I think we let him go early.”
Rotherham United should not be blamed for Jonson Clarke-Harris decision
Although it is simple to argue in retrospect that Rotherham should not have permitted Clarke-Harris to leave, few could have foreseen the direction his career would take following his departure.
It is impossible to hold former manager Paul Warne responsible for firing Clarke-Harris because he only managed to score 10 goals in 78 games during his first stint at the New York Stadium. Michael Smith, who took his place, was a great addition to the Millers.
It was a brilliant move for Rotherham to sign Clarke-Harris this summer after his stellar play at Peterborough. Although he hasn’t performed well this season, Evans would really benefit from having him on his team.
With Posh, Clarke-Harris was promoted from League One in the 2020–21 season, and he will be looking to do the same with the Millers this season, albeit it would be challenging given their sluggish start.
