Being a goalie is never an easy situation. For example, Ted Sharman-Lowe.
On a season-long loan at Doncaster Rovers, the Chelsea goalkeeper has made a solid start to life in South Yorkshire, recording seven clean sheets in 19 games. The spotlight, however, is never far away. The 21-year-old had an emotional rollercoaster over the first ninety minutes of his most recent game, a goalless stalemate at Carlisle. A number of critics were prepared to dismiss him at halftime after a dismal first half in Cumbria that was full of risky passes and unforced mistakes.
However, it was followed by two perfect late stops that allowed Grant McCann’s men keep the point. Many of those same fans began praising him as a result.
According to the player, he accepts all of the praise and/or criticism with a grain of salt. “I think my performances have been good and consistent enough to stay in the team,” he said to BBC Sheffield.
“Louis Jones and Ian Lawlor, the goalkeepers here, are incredible. They push me every day, and I hope I push them back.” I’m having fun. I joined the squad at the beginning of the season, and with each game I play, my confidence grows, and I sense that everyone believes in me. I’m having a great time playing EFL games.
Compared to previous season, when Sharman-Lowe was denied playing time while on loan at Bromley of the National League, this is a huge improvement. Even though they were promoted in the end, he understandably doesn’t consider it a good experience.
“Last year was a tricky one as I didn’t really play,” he says. Since I wasn’t playing, my promotion with Bromley didn’t really signify much. So it’s all I’ve wanted to come here and play frequently. I sincerely appreciate the chance.
