Wakefield Trinity have provided a key injury update as the squad gears up for their Super League return in 2025. There is mixed news, with Tom Johnstone expected back in full pre-season training before the turn of the new year. However, veteran back rower Josh Griffin could miss the start of the season.
Johnstone has re-signed for Trinity from Catalans Dragons, with the fying winger turning down a new deal with the French side to return to his junior club. He hasn’t fully recovered from a leg fracture suffered while playing for Catalans, but the 29-year-old, who had surgery with a plate inserted to correct the issue, will be ready to start the Super League season.
Speaking via Wakefield’s YouTube channel, head physio Matt Crowther said: “He fractured his fibula bone in his lower leg against Castleford in July last season, and the type of lad Tom is, he wanted to get back for international duty, but unfortunately that didn’t work.
“We had to get him to have his surgery over here because he needed a plate put in it to strengthen it, but he’s doing really well now, and he’ll be back running on the Alter-G machine this week, and his transition to the field will come in the next few weeks. I wouldn’t expect him to be much longer until after Christmas and then be ready to start the season.”
Crowther also provided an update on Griffin, who has had surgery on an adductor tear that ended his 2024 season and is facing a long recovery period.
“That injury required surgery; there was no way around it,” Crowther explained. “That meant he had to be booked in at the beginning of November, and he’s not been in with us yet; we can’t do anything just yet. He’s just sat at home recovering from his surgery, which he had done in London. We can then start his rehabilitation next week, and the return to play is a long one, around three or four months.”
