Dartford Crossing close as 45 killed,51 fights for life after ‘risk of explosion’ from tanker fire

The QEII Bridge at Dartford Crossing was shut to traffic due to a fire on a ship – with a ‘risk of explosion’ exclusion zone in place. The southbound bridge was closed between Essex and Kent in the early hours of Boxing Day (December 26).

The closure was first reported at around 11.30pm on Christmas Day. Diversions were in place before the road reopened at around 2am.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “This incident has now cleared and the A282 southbound Dartford Crossing QEII Bridge has fully reopened. The east tunnel contraflow has been removed and has reopened to traffic travelling northbound. Have a safe journey and thanks for your patience.”

Dartford Crossing tonight

Two lanes closed due to closure of the QE2 bridge on M25 Dartford Tunnel anticlockwise from J1A A206 (Dartford) to J31 A1306 (Lakeside / Purfleet).

Because of the closure of the clockwise QE2 Bridge, one tunnel is operating in each direction. From Kent into Essex (anti-clockwise) only the left hand tunnel is open and has a height limit of 4.8 meters.”
