Barrow Raiders captain explains reason retirement U-turn

Jarrad Stack, the captain of the Barrow Raiders, will remain in charge of the team at the age of 37 after deciding against retirement and agreeing to a one-year contract extension.

On February 13, the Australian second rower who now calls the northwest of England home celebrates his birthday.

Stack, who has topped 300 games and scored 110 tries in the UK, joins Barrow for the 2017 season after spending eight seasons with Workington.

He has been the Raiders’ captain since 2020, and he said that his U-turn was influenced by how his teammates, coach Paul Crarey, and supporters reacted to his first intention to end his career.

“With everything going on in my personal life, it’s been a really difficult year mentally, and I needed some time to myself,” he said.

He has been the Raiders’ captain since 2020, and he said that his U-turn was influenced by how his teammates, coach Paul Crarey, and supporters reacted to his first intention to end his career.

He clarified, “I needed some time to myself because it’s been a really difficult year mentally with things going on in my personal life.”

One of the main reasons I wanted to return was the frequent communications.

“I know I’ll be 37 soon after the season starts, but I also know what I can offer and so does the club.”

Crarey said: “After a tough year on and off the field, it was no surprise Jarrad decided to retire, but after a few weeks away where he could reflect and relax, he

has made the decision to try it again in a year.

“Jarrad, who is already a legend in the club, goes above and beyond and contributes an amazing attitude and leadership abilities.”

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped to partially finance Jarrad’s contract through the 1875 Club, which was organised by supporters. It wouldn’t have been feasible without that.

Andy Gaffney, director of rugby, went on to say: “We’re thrilled to finalise this contract.

“Jarrad is one of the most reliable players at this level, both in attack and defence, and has been a vital member of the Raiders for many seasons.”

On Saturday, January 18, Barrow will play its dual-registration rivals, Salford, in a preseason game.

That comes after Sunday’s home preseason matches against Whitehaven and seven days later against Workington.
