Ricky-Jade Jones, an attacker for Peterborough United who is reportedly a target for Johannes Hoff Thorup this month, has been cautioned against being pursued by Norwich City.
After 26 games, the Canaries are in eleventh place in the Championship, three points behind sixth-place West Bromwich Albion, and are currently in play-off contention.
It’s unclear where Norwich will end up this season because Thorup’s team has struggled with consistency this year.
Although Norwich has the second-best goals per game average in the division (1.7), they also need new attacking energy because top scorer Borja Sainz will be suspended for the next six games. As a result, they seem to be considering a move for Jones.
Norwich City’s transfer interest in Peterborough United’s Ricky-Jade Jones
As per a recent update from Darren Witcoop, Norwich have launched an enquiry for the pacey forward amid stiff competition for his services.
Norwich are described as the “latest club” to have made a bid after a proposal from Cardiff City was turned down, with Football League World having first revealed the Bluebirds’ interest
Jones is also said to have interest abroad, with Bundesliga outfit Freiburg touted as admirers, while Middlesbrough are reportedly keeping tabs but will only push for a move if top scorer Emmanuel Latte Lath leaves the Riverside Stadium this month amid significant interest.
His long-term future at Peterborough, however, remains uncertain as he has now headed into the final six months of his contract with the club, although they will be able to collect a not-insignificant, tribunal-determined fee for the forward due to his age, should he depart as a free agent.
The Posh attacker, who can play as either a striker or on the wing, clocked in as the world’s fastest footballer in 2024 over the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Alphonso Davies. Jones is known for his electric speed and has also been fairly prolific infront of goal for Posh, having scored on 25 occasions across all competitions over the last season-and-a-half.
However, Peterborough, who are presently sitting only two points above the third-tier drop zone, has only had six of those in league play this season.
Norwich City offered caution over Peterborough United, Ricky-Jade Jones transfer interest
After Norwich showed interest, FLW asked Zeke Downes, our resident Canaries fan pundit, if a possible cut-price trade for Jones is the kind of move his team should be pursuing.
Zeke is wary of the significant jump from League One to the Championship, despite being heartened by Jones’ age and goal return over the past 18 months and expressing faith in the important decision-makers at Carrow Road.
“I definitely think that getting a player that’s homegrown will help us,” Zeke stated to FLW.
“Aside from being at a great age, he also has a decent amount of experience and plays well in an offensive position.
However, Peterborough is clearly a step down, and we’re not sure if he’ll be able to make the leap.
“Obviously, you don’t want to be filling a roster position with a player who can’t make that transition, but if it’s going to be a discounted deal, I wouldn’t say no.
Although I don’t know a much about him, he has a respectable (goal) return. I’m all for it if they believe he’s worth pursuing.”
