Glasner reveals reason for Esse deal as Palace seal £14.5m transfer with Millwall

According to Oliver Glasner, one of the key reasons Crystal Palace chose to sign Romain Esse from Millwall was because of his “great character.”

After the Eagles reached an agreement to purchase the 19-year-old winger from Millwall for £12 million plus £2.5 million in add-ons, Palace unveiled him as their first acquisition of the month on Saturday morning.

Before making a joke that Esse was only signed because he lives three minutes away from the training facility, making his travel environmentally friendly, Glasner praised Palace’s scouting department for seeing his potential early.

After the Eagles defeated West Ham 2-0 on Saturday thanks to a double from Jean-Philippe Mateta, and moved up to 12th place in the Premier League standings, Glasner stated, “I’m delighted that Romain joins us and can now train with us.”

“He will be a typical Crystal Palace acquisition—a young Championship player whose development we will support.” We’ll deal with Romain like this.

We have faith in his abilities. Good first touch, left foot, game comprehension, and spacing awareness. After that, we’ll collaborate with him and help him get better. It provides us with an additional offensive option.

Glasner joked when asked why the team chose to sign Esse over other targets: “We said, ‘Who is living closest to the training ground? We will then sign him. Since Romain could walk over—it’s only a three-minute walk—it was him. It’s sustainability. He is not in need of an automobile. Tomorrow, he can walk.

“Of course, Dougie [Freedman] has known of him longer,” he remarked in a more serious response to the same query. Our staff of scouts is excellent.

After analysing our games, we question which profile we could add to the team that isn’t [currently] on it.

“In my opinion, his Championship numbers are not particularly noteworthy. However, he is 19.

He has excellent character, which is the second factor. Dougie is well familiar with him. I spoke with him as well. He wants to get better and learn, and he is listening. We want someone with this character and excellent skills.

It took a little too long to complete the signing, to be a little critical. However, the middle of the transfer window is preferable to the end.
