One club icon has already stated that he may make the difference in the title hunt, but Liverpool has lost out on this winter addition who has already mentioned the team by name.
Murillo, a Brazilian defender, signed a new four-year contract with Nottingham Forest and will not be moving to Liverpool this month.
His new contract will end any possibility of the 22-year-old, who helped spark Fore
Merseyside landmark Arne Slot’s lack of a left-sided centre-back who can play left-back when needed has been lamented by Carragher. Additionally, he stated earlier in January that Liverpool would be “certain” to reclaim the title if they signed a player with that profile this month.
“Liverpool must They need that left-sided defender who can do a little bit of both, as I’ve been saying for a while,” he stated on the Stick to Football podcast, which is presented by Sky Bet. “Power, presence, and a little more stature.
“That’s all I have. If Liverpool signs such player in January, I believe. It’s calling out for something, but nothing has been connected. Liverpool would very certainly win the league if they did it, in my opinion.
With just 20 goals given up in 21 games this season, Slot’s team already has the best defensive record in the Premier League. But at times, the centre-back alternatives behind skipper Virgil van Dijk, like as Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, have appeared a little thin.
Given that the player has already mentioned Liverpool in relation to his own goals, it will be even more painful to lose out on Murillo, who played on the left side of defence for former team Corinthians. The Brazilian mentioned other Premier League powerhouses in the same sentence, but it’s obvious that he hopes to make that move on a larger scale eventually.
“I had the dream of playing in the Premier League and I had that thought,” he said last summer in an interview with the Benja Me Mucho podcast. “I decided to attend Nottingham Forest, hope for a successful season, and then head to a major club.”
“I had that in my head. I’d choose Manchester City but it would be more difficult for me to be a regular starter given the players they have in their squad. There’s City, Arsenal as well who are fighting for the Premier League title. I wouldn’t discard Liverpool either. It would be a good opportunity for me to show my football in a big club.”
As well as the likes of Konate and Gomez not being able to match Van Dijk’s levels, the pair have each endured their injury troubles in the past. Murillo, meanwhile, has been an omnipresent force for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who boast just as many Premier League clean sheets as Liverpool this term with nine.
