From now until the end of the season, Middlesbrough will continue to monitor the League One star. After that, Boro will decide whether to formally request his services.
Jones, 22, has recently drawn attention to Peterborough United. This season, he has made 38 appearances across all competitions and contributed 14 goals, seven of which have come in the league. The Posh run the risk of losing him for free when his contract at London Road expires in the summer.
According to Football League World’s most recent report on his circumstances, Michael Carrick is interested in him as a player. After the deadline passed earlier this year, Darren Ferguson’s team was able to retain him in the January window.
Middlesbrough could see Jones as one for the future at the Riverside Stadium.
If they signed him, he would be a useful option down the line and would boost their attacking ranks.
He has a lot of potential and has played a fair few games so far in his career.
Jones was a regular for Peterborough United at several different junior levels and has progressed through the academy ranks.
He signed his first professional contract soon after the Posh gave him his senior debut against Arsenal Under-21’s in an EFL Trophy match in 2019 when he was just 16 years old.
He has subsequently grown to be one of their most valued assets and has already appeared in 184 games for them, scoring 38 goals.
“Ricky has developed nicely over the last couple of years,” Ferguson said on their website at the time of the Peterborough native’s most recent contract extension, which he signed in 2021. The boy is incredibly talented.
Jones, meanwhile, stated: “I think I’m at the proper spot to keep growing. I have had first-rate treatment from the manager and the staff, and I am eager to go back after the summer break.
Whether Middlesbrough decides to go for Jones will only become clear with time.
He looks headed for a move up a league, and it seems doubtful that he will still be at Peterborough United come next season.
