Wrexham star makes unacceptable statement over club

On Sunday night, the entire sports world was focused on the Super Bowl, and as everyone knows, Rob McElhenney had a stake in the outcome because of his passion for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Since the owner of Wrexham has never concealed his connection to the NFL team, it is understandable that he was ecstatic when the Eagles advanced to this season’s Super Bowl final.

Rob McElhenney, a native of Philadelphia, has always placed a high premium on watching the Eagles win. However, the Hollywood star’s loyalties have been divided between American football and what the Americans would call “soccer” since he took charge at Wrexham four years ago.

Which team, then, is McElhenney’s favorite? You might want to turn away now if you’re a Wrexham supporter to avoid losing your heart.

The season concluded with an exciting matchup between the Eagles and the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, which McElhenney’s side won 40–22.

McElhenney posted the following tweet earlier on Sunday: “Cautious tweet. Here are the five best days of my life. 8 p.m. on a Sunday. You can image how he felt after the win, considering that was before Philadelphia had even begun the game.

“Not so dangerous anymore,” McElhenney stated on Twitter/X once more. The five most memorable evenings of my life. Fly, Eagle, Fly.

The Eagles had previously won the Super Bowl back in 2017, defeating the New England Patriots to land their first ever title in the franchise’s history.

So, that’s two of the best moments of Rob’s life pinned down, surely. Considering he and his wife have two children, that’s probably another two highlights locked in, too. So, hopefully one of the other five memorable nights is reserved for Wrexham’s success over the last few years.

After Wrexham’s promotion from League Two in 2024, Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter/X to say: “Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”

That’s a pretty emphatic reaction from the Deadpool star, and exactly what football fans would expect from a suitably passionate owner. However, McElhenney was less descriptive about his own feelings regarding that promotion.

McElhenney, on the other hand, merely posted: “No words.” We’ll pardon him for being stunned by his favorite club’s second consecutive promotion, even though he included a love heart emoji with the message.

Even still, it’s pretty obvious that McElhenney’s passion for sports is dominated by the Eagles when he contrasts his responses to the Super Bowl victory and Wrexham’s accomplishments.

He has, however, previously discussed the “great joy” he receives from sharing in Wrexham’s progress. Every time he visits the Racecourse Ground, he even collects bits of grass from the field as a priceless memento of the memories he creates there.

Fortunately, McElhenney’s life can accommodate both teams, and we can never question his dedication to the Wrexham project.

In the third round last week, Wrexham easily defeated League Two rival Port Vale, winning 4-1 away from home thanks to a solid showing by Phil Parkinson’s B-team.
It’s unclear if Parkinson will go with the same lineup for Tuesday’s match against Bolton, but there are a lot of alternatives available to the Wrexham boss.

The same cannot be said for Steven Schumacher, the new Bolton manager, who has only been in his position for a week and is dealing with an injury issue.

Speaking to Bolton Live ahead of the upcoming EFL Trophy clash, Schumacher gave a damning assessment of the fitness in his squad, with only 15 senior players potentially available for the game after star striker Aaron Collin suffered an injury.
Schumacher said: “He had a bang on his hip after running into Nathan Baxter in training. It is in his oblique, and that can be really painful. He wasn’t moving great on Friday, so he wasn’t obviously available [for Crawley]. And he still isn’t moving brilliantly today, but he said it has settled down a lot.

“We are hoping it will just be a few days and it will settle down and he can get going again. We all know how important he is so we can’t rush him if he’s not feeling right. We will just wait and see how he is.”

Bolton have also lost new signing Kion Etete to injury already, and have only been able to name 21 players out of a possible 22-man squad for the rest of the season.
