This will be the former Newcastle United defender’s first season as a Football League manager.
Mike Williamson, a former defender for Newcastle United, is expected to take over Milton Keynes Dons after leaving Gateshead.
Graham Alexander was let go by the League Two team on Monday after just 16 games in charge. With the same number of points above the relegation zone and six points behind the play-off spots, he departs The Dons in 16th place in the standings.
Williamson became the early choice to take over at the Stadium MK right away, and according to NewcastleWorld, there is a “highly likely” chance he will follow Alexander.The 39-year-old initially relocated to the Northeast when he moved from Portsmouth to Newcastle in January 2010. During a six-a
half-year tenure, he made 169 appearances before joining Oxford United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In 2018, he came back to the area with The Heed, first as a player and then, a year later, as player-manager after the team was demoted to the National League North and nearly went out of business.
In just his second season in command, Williamson guided Gateshead back to the National League. The previous season, he stabilised the team in the top division of non-league football and guided them to the FA Trophy final at Wembley, where they were defeated by Halifax Town.
After fifteen games this season, The Heed, who have won seven, drawn four, and lost four, are sixth in the National League playoff standings. Ian Watson, the assistant manager, is anticipated to accompany Williamson.
Gateshead play at Chesterfield on Saturday, while MK Dons visit Accrington Stanley.
