After four years at The Den, Millwall fired manager Gary Rowett. After an uneven season, the London team is currently 15th in the Championship.
Manager Gary Rowett left Millwall by mutual consent, the club has confirmed.
Though only three points outside the play-off spots in the Sky Bet Championship, the Lions are now ranked 15th, but Rowett stated that ‘the time just feels right to part ways’.
The team declared that Paul Robinson, the first-team coach, and current assistant manager Adam Barrett have assumed temporary leadership.
“Millwall Football Club can confirm it has mutually agreed to part company with first-team manager Gary Rowett,” the Lions stated on their official website.
‘We truly appreciate Gary’s efforts throughout his time in charge, and he goes with the best wishes of everybody associated to the club,’ said Chairman James Berylson.
Even though I haven’t had much direct work with Gary, I have loved every moment we’ve spent together, and I believe that his four fruitful years in leadership have improved the club’s on-field standing.
Rowett, 49, a former manager of Burton, Birmingham, Derby and Stoke, was named Millwall’s manager in October 2019, not long after Neil Harris quit.
Under Rowett, Millwall declared that they had improved, and he had ‘taken the club to top-half finishes in each campaign, often challenging for a place in the play-offs along the way.’
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as manager of Millwall and I leave with the feeling that the club has improved,” Rowett continued. Like in football, there are moments when it feels right to call it quits.
