A driver who killed a former rugby league player in a collision has been given a sentence.
In September 2021, while standing on Cronton Lane in Widnes, former Widnes Vikings player Liam Walsh, 23, was trying to hail a taxi when he was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa, according to Cheshire Police.
Driver Glyn Davies, 59, of Widnes, accepted that he caused a death by operating his vehicle carelessly.
He received a 10-month prison term with a two-year suspension.
A five-year driving prohibition, 20 days of rehabilitation, and a four-month electronic curfew between 20:00 and 6:00 were also imposed on Davies.
On September 18, 2021, just before midnight, Mr. Walsh was hit.
Police said he was rushed to the hospital but died there a short time later, with his loved ones by his side.
After Deepdale resident Davies was given a sentence at Liverpool Crown Court, Mr. Walsh’s family described him as a “very special person.”
It was reported that his passing had “left a gaping hole in our family that will never be filled – what happened that day was totally avoidable, but due to the actions of one man, Liam has been taken from us forever”
The family continued, “Nothing will ever be able to make up for our loss or bring him back.
“Liam was a thoughtful and kind young guy who touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with.
“He was committed to his partner, and Liam loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was a nice, compassionate person with the biggest heart; he brightened each space he entered and was a true gentleman.
We will always be proud of him, and it was a pleasure and an honour to have him in our lives throughout his 23 years.
In the Super League, Mr. Walsh made six appearances for his local team after making his debut in 2017. He had previously attended the club’s academy and earned recognition on the international stage.
In 2019, he departed the group.
Former Vikings CEO Phil Finney declared that he was “devastated.”
Liam played a significant role in our club for a lot of years and was a very wonderful individual.
“With his sense of humour and infectious personality, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a one-off and will be remembered with great affection by all at the club.”
