Donald Sutherland shares frustration with Blue Jays”

Even famed Canadian actor Donald Sutherland is frustrated with the Toronto Blue Jays.

On Thursday, Sutherland was talking about a new Canada Post stamp featuring his likeness when he used the analogy of batting to discuss Toronto’s early elimination from the Major League Baseball postseason.

From his Eastern Townships home in Quebec, Sutherland stated, “The Blue Jays didn’t hit the ball so well in clutch situations.”

Earlier this month, Toronto’s best-of-three wild-card series against the Minnesota Twins ended in back-to-back losses. With just one run scored against the Twins, the Blue Jays were shut out 2-0 in the second game and lost 3-1 in the first.

Sutherland was especially disappointed when Minnesota pitcher Sonny Grey caught Toronto’s all-star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. off second base to end the fifth inning. Guerrero was picked off with leadoff runner George Springer on third by all-star shortstop Bo Bichette, who led the Blue Jays with a.306 batting average.

With a runner on third, how could you have Vladdy caught off second base? 88-year-old Sutherland sighed with frustration. “I was thinking of shooting myself.”

Sutherland was born in New Brunswick before moving to Nova Scotia in his teenage years, but left the Maritimes for higher education — first at the University of Toronto and later in England — where he pursued his passion for acting.

Although Sutherland follows the Blue Jays closely, he took solace knowing that his favourites were not eliminated from this year’s playoffs.

“Of course, my team is the Expos. They’re gone,” he said, referring to the Montreal franchise that moved to Washington, D.C., in 2005.

The stamp of Sutherland features an austere photo of him in profile, overlaid with the titles of some of his most iconic projects, including “Ordinary People,” “The Italian Job,” and “M*A*S*H*.”
