Mets fired several veterans who helped build past teams

While the New York Mets have not made any significant player moves this offseason, president of baseball operations David Stearns has made his imprint felt in other ways for those in non-front-facing roles.

According to The New York Post’s Mike Puma, Stearns fired several scouts and another left on his own.

Three veteran scouts – Joseph Kowal, Pat Jones and Eddie Bane – were fired this week by the Mets. A fourth, Chad MacDonald, stepped aside for personal reasons. Bane was in amateur scouting, the rest were in the pro scouting department.

Kowal held the title of senior advisor, pro player personnel, while Jones was a pro player evaluator and Bane a senior advisor, amateur scouting. MacDonald was also a pro player evaluator.

Bane has worked for the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels and has been mentioned as a general manager candidate in the past. He was the scouting director for the Angels’ draft in 2009 when they took Randal Grichuk, Mike Trout, Tyler Skaggs, Garrett Richards and Patrick Corbin, and he oversaw the signing of Kendrys Morales. His son, Jaymie, is also a scout for the Mets.

Kowal has been with the Mets since 2016, starting as a professional scout, a title he held from 2008-16 with the Milwaukee Brewers, Stearns’ old team, according to his LinkedIn profile.

MacDonald was with the Mets for the 2011 draft that saw them take Brandon Nimmo. He left a year later for an assistant GM role with the San Diego Padres and was rehired by the Mets in 2020.
