A seven-year-old boy is on a mission to make a difference to the lives of children in hospital this summer.
Alex Foxall, from Wibsey, has been inspired to raise money for the Bradford Hospitals’ Charity in memory of his friend Axl Walker, who died three days before his third birthday in 2018.
Axl was Alex’s friend in playgroup and spent a lot of time in hospital because of his rare blood disorder.
In his memory, Alex is embarking on a 75-mile cycle ride over 30 days to raise money for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity.
The money will be used to fund toys and activities to keep children calm and entertained while in hospital.
The challenge also marks the 75th birthday of the NHS – a tribute to the doctors, nurses, and staff behind the scenes who provide care.
Alex’s mum Louise, deputy service manager in neurology, care of the elderly and stroke at St Luke’s Hospital, said she and Alex’s dad were incredibly proud of their little boy for wanting to help other children.
Louise said: “He wants to help the children who spend time in hospital and he’s so enthusiastic.
“It’s going to be challenging because we will be cycling every day during the school holidays, but he’s ready for the challenge.
“I’m not sure if his dad and I are as prepared for all the cycling.”
Alex added: “I want the children to forget they are poorly by helping them get new toys.”
Axl’s mum, Claire Walker, said: “Toys played such a huge part in helping to support Axl while in hospital, so to have one of his playgroup friends, who he played with so much, raise money to help fund toys is fantastic.
“Alex is a little superstar who at such a young age, is doing something selfless. This will mean so much to children while in hospital.”
Lisa Williams, head of fundraising for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, described Alex as “an inspiration to us all”.
