West Ham “could seal the signing” of new defender for “bargain fee”
This week’s rumour suggested that West Ham United would “seal the signing” of a defender in January for a “bargain fee”.
January transfer plans for West Ham
The Hammers have an amazing 17-game winning streak going in Europe, but their performance at home has been a little more inconsistent.
This season, West Ham has achieved amazing victories over teams like expensive Chelsea and fast-moving Brighton.
However, a 4-1 loss to Aston Villa this weekend may have shown some serious problems that need to be fixed.
Many players in the squad are also under contract; among those with expiring contracts in the summer of 2019 are veteran defender Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek, Pablo Fornals, Ben Johnson, Vladimir Coufal, Michail Antonio, Conor Coventry, Aaron Cresswell, Lukasz Fabianski, and Michail Antonio.
Club options are included in the contracts of players like Coufal, Antonio, and Soucek; although, the latter may still depart West Ham after recent negotiations for a new contract broke down (Football Insider).
Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd may also leave West Ham in the meantime due to interest from the Middle East.
Manager David Moyes will be keen to replace one of the defensive pairings, and it’s thought that Serhou Guirassy of Stuttgart, among other strikers, is one of the candidates being considered to replace Antonio.
Update on Sebastien Caceres’ move
Returning to the subject of possible additions to Moyes’ defence, it is suggested that West Ham may consider a shrewd winter window choice. Sebastien Caceres, a defender for Uruguay, has received accolades for his recent outstanding play at the international level.
Last week, he was instrumental in his team’s 2-0 victory over Brazil.
The 24-year-old, who has also been referred to as a “very valuable” player for Club America, would be a good target for a cheap price.
Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke claim that West Ham “could seal the signing” of Caceres in January for a “bargain” sum. Despite his rising reputation, it is thought that the centre defender might depart for as little as £6–£10 million.
As things stand, Caceres’ contract is set to expire in 2024, therefore Club America is quite unlikely to seek a big fee for one of its great players. Even while West Ham is involved, they aren’t the only Premier League team keeping an eye on things.
In fact, Moyes is not alone in his appreciation of Caceres; Newcastle, Fulham, and Tottenham are also fans of the Englishman.
It will be intriguing to watch who of the four teams takes a genuine interest in signing him.
With the summer purchase of Konstaninos Mavropanos from Stuttgart, West Ham’s search for a center-back seemed to have come to an end, but it seems Moyes is keen to add another to his roster.
Harry Maguire, a defender for Manchester United who is now having a very tough time adjusting to life at Old Trafford, is another rumoured target for West Ham.
