Newcastle were awarded a dubious penalty in the first half of their Premier League clash with Wolves and Alan Shearer has given an honest verdict on the hotly-debated decision
In the match against Wolves, Alan Shearer acknowledged that he believed his team, Newcastle, shouldn’t have been given a penalty.
After a protracted VAR review, the Magpies were controversially awarded a spot kick in added time of the first half at Molineux on Saturday, which they took a 2-1 lead from. Following consecutive corners for the opposition, Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan was found to have tripped Newcastle defender Fabian Schar in the box.
Referee Anthony Taylor’s ruling stood despite a two-minute review by Stockley Park officials on a day when VAR was questioned in the Premier League once more. Schar went down till very little contact from Hwang, according to the replays, and Shearer provided his honest assessment after Callum Wilson put the Eddie Howe team the lead for the second time in the game.
Shearer wrote the message, “Not a pen for me,” along with three laughing emojis. After a social media user asserted that the former Newcastle striker and St. James’ Park icon wouldn’t criticise the choice, he responded.
Shay Given, Shearer’s former teammate, thinks that VAR made the correct call in not sending Taylor to the pitch-side monitor to review his decision. “I don’t think the referee made a clear and obvious error,” Given said on Sky Sports during the halftime break.
Some perspectives will argue that it’s not a penalty, while others would claim it is. From the initial angle I see live, I don’t believe it’s a glaringly evident inaccuracy. Schar is shrewd; maybe he gets eliminated rather easily. Newcastle is somewhat fortunate.”
Karen Carney, a former England international, disapproved of her fellow pundit and declared, “I don’t think it was a penalty.” As you say, I believe he attempted to slow down at the last second, but VAR accepted it because it wasn’t reversed.”
However, Hwang had the final laugh in the second half, equalising on 71 minutes with a masterful strike. The dynamic South Korean player made a darting run and was awarded the ball in the penalty area thanks to excellent work by Wolves colleague Toti Gomes on the right flank.
Hwang then outwitted Dan Burn, the left-back for the Magpies, who slid in with the intention of blocking the Wolves striker’s attempt. The game ended 2-2, but Hwang managed to hold off and cut inside before coolly putting the ball past Nick Pope to bring up a thrilling climax.
