3 attacking midfielders Southampton should consider amid high-profile interest in

Nicolai Vallys, an offensive midfielder for Brondby, is reportedly being observed by Southampton ahead of the January transfer window.

Aston Villa, Marseille, PSV, Real Betis, Southampton, Manchester United, Wolfsburg, and Marseille are rumoured to have witnessed Vallys score and assist in Brondby’s 2-1 victory over Nordsjaelland over the weekend. Reports first appeared in the Danish publication Ekstrabladet, which Sport Witness then repeated.

The 27-year-old has put together an excellent year, scoring seven goals and dishing out two assists in 13 Superligaen contests. The Saints would do well to consider their options, though, considering some of the other teams rumoured to be interested in Vallys.

Having said that, Southampton ought to be keeping an eye on these three additional offensive midfielders.

The Eredivisie is regarded by elite teams as an excellent league to recruit from, thus Southampton would do well to acquire the 21-year-old offensive midfielder Steijn before major clubs notice his skill. Steijn has been playing well for Twente this season.

He has a tonne of senior experience already, having managed 18 goals and six assists for ADO Den Haag in the past. His seven goals in 14 games this season have demonstrated his ability to compete in the top division, and at just 21, he still has plenty of years to go.

Southampton would also be wise to look inside, as Poku of Peterborough United appears destined for a higher level of play. He is equally adept out wide as he is in the centre as an attacking midfielder.

Although he is still just 22 years old, he shares Steijn’s positive experience record. Poku, who has made over 150 senior games, has three goals and five assists so far this year.

Last but not least, Southampton may want to take notice of Kosovo international Muslija due to his excellent play in the 2.Bundesliga. The 25-year-old, who can play on the left or as an offensive midfielder, has two assists and seven goals in 12 appearances in all competitions.

He has been a true star for Paderborn thanks to his technical skill, and after spending his whole career in Germany, a new challenge in the Championship with Southampton would be alluring.
