Stoke City should look to send D’Margio Wright-Phillips out on loan in January.
The son of Shaun Wright-Phillips, D’Margio Wright-Phillips, has had difficulty breaking into the first squad at Stoke City; a loan transfer in January would help him acquire more experience.
The 22-year-old attacker has shown promise, but his opportunities have been few. He needs consistent first-team play soon.
Wright-Phillips did not play to his full capacity during his brief loan stint at Northampton Town the previous season. He ought to join a team that is interested in a player with his calibre and profile so he can demonstrate his skills.
D’Margio has a lot of expectations because he is the grandson of Ian Wright and the son of Shaun Wright-Phillips. He participated in youth team play with Manchester City before becoming a 19-year-old Stoke player in February 2021.
Under Stoke manager Alex Neil, Wright-Phillips has found it difficult to acquire a consistent run of appearances. It would make sense for him to move out on loan in January in order to receive more first-team experience. The deft forward has a tonne of talent, but because he doesn’t get many opportunities, he hasn’t yet realised it. He needs to play regular first-team football as soon as possible now that he is 22.
How has the Stoke career of Wright-Phillips gone thus far?
Wright-Phillips has contributed an amazing 16 goals to Stoke’s U21 team’s total score in 33 games, hoping to make an impression on his first-team management. In January 2022, he made his professional debut when The Potters defeated Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.
Just two weeks later, in a 3-2 Championship home loss to Fulham, he scored his first goal as a professional for Stoke. Unfortunately, his opportunities to play for the first team decreased, and he occasionally had trouble breaking into the group. Wright-Phillips’ lone other goal for Stoke occurred at the beginning of the 2022–2023 season when, after coming off the bench 13 minutes earlier, he equalised against Middlesbrough in the 90th minute.
The 22-year-old was playing sparingly for Stoke’s U21 team in January of last year, having failed to start a single Championship match for the team. In four games, he scored three goals. Wright-Phillips looks to have been totally locked out of the first team and is only making youth appearances so far in the 2023–24 season. He is definitely calling for a loan spell.
Where is the best place to loan Wright-Phillips?
The adaptable striker played a majority of the previous season on loan at League Two’s Northampton Town.
Despite the club’s promotion to League One, Wright-Phillips only made seven appearances off the bench and did not start a single game. Since the Cobblers were having success, the 22-year-old found it challenging to take someone’s spot on the squad.
Wright-Phillips could want to play on loan for a team that genuinely wants a player with his calibre and profile if he were to go out on loan this season. Although he can play on the left or through the centre, he has spent the most of his career playing on the right wing. Several teams in Leagues One and Two that may be able to provide him consistent playing time would benefit from his flexibility.
Many have seen from his performances for Stoke when given the opportunity that he is more than capable of playing at a respectable level; nevertheless, it is now time for him to gain some games in the EFL. Wright-Phillips should go to a team that will give him the opportunity to thrive since his time at Northampton was not indicative of his potential.
