Thanks to a brace from Jobe Bellingham, Sunderland supporters will always remember Rotherham United, since the Yorkshire club’s fortunes have remained unchanged since, at Matt Taylor’s expense.
The Championship rivals of Sunderland, Rotherham United, have sacked manager Matt Taylor. The team is now ranked a pitiful 22nd in the league.
Jobe Bellingham scored a brace to help the Back Cats defeat the Millers 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in August. Since then, the Yorkshire team’s season has become worse. The 41-year-old’s career came to an end on Sunday after his team lost 5-0 against Watford. With this loss, he became the seventh Championship manager to resign this season.
After leaving Exeter City to take Paul Warne’s place at Exeter City last year, Taylor had been with Rotherham United for 13 months. Last season, the manager maintained the team competitive, although the team was in 11th place when he took over. Only two of the team’s first 16 league games this season have been victories.
The boss, who blamed ‘a bunch of players not believing’ following the defeat to Watford, said that Rotherham United’s home form was insufficient to save them from their current losing streak, which began when they defeated Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in November.
Chairman Tony Stewart said in a club statement that the search for a new manager had already started and that the team had been given permission to hire a new manager before Leeds United’s visit on November 24 during the two-week international break.
Former Millwall manager Gary Rowett, former Sheffield United and Watford manager Chris Wilder, and new Leeds United assistant Karl Robinson are the early favourites for the position.
“We felt that we had to act now by making a managerial change in order to give ourselves the best possible chance of retaining our Sky Bet Championship status this season,” Mr. Stewart stated, speaking for both the Board and himself.
“It was not an easy choice to make, and we are thankful to Matt for his efforts over the last year. Needless to say, everyone at Rotherham United sends him their very best wishes as he departs.
On December 29, the Black Cats will play their last game of the year away in Rotherham.
