The Argyle joint club record hugh summer signings

Neil Dewsnip, the Pilgrims’ director of football, has been pleased with the contributions of the talented duo so far this season

According to director of football Neil Dewsnip, Plymouth Argyle is already reaping the benefits of their record-breaking £1 million summer acquisitions of Morgan Whittaker and Bali Mumba.

Both of the gifted 22-year-olds, Whittaker in particular, have made major contributions in the Championship after shining while on loan for the Pilgrims during the 2022–23 League One title-winning campaign. With seven goals and three assists, he is tied for the fourth-highest scorer in the division with Mumba, who has two of each.

Their penetrative attacking play is one of the reasons why Argyle have netted 27 times in 16 games, which is the equal fourth highest total in the Championship.

Dewsnip told Plymouth Live, “It was a really brave and bold statement by us all, rubber-stamped by Simon (Hallett, Argyle’s chairman and majority owner), of course,” in response to the transfers of Mumba and Whittaker in July.

“The two new arrivals sent a strong message by declaring, ‘We are here to compete, not merely to be a tourist football team that plays football in the Championship for a season before dropping back to League One.’

“Those two signings made a big deal out of it, and happily, I think both are doing really well. They are both highly offensive guys who have made the kind of contributions you would like to see.

“Let’s remember, Bali’s reputation has gone before him. It has been probably slightly harder for him in many ways. He was League One Young Player-of-the-Year etc, etc last season, getting all the plaudits while Morgan, unfortunately, wasn’t because he wasn’t playing (after he was recalled by Swansea City from Argyle at the start of January).

“Morgan is doing absolutely wonderfully well now. He’s very much part of our creativity, our attacking, along with Finn (Azaz), Bali and Ryan Hardie. Morgan has done particularly well, his record stands for itself really.”

Whittaker has already scored seven goals this season, therefore it seems likely that he will reach fifteen, which would make his transfer fee extremely cheap. Dewsnip stated, “We are really hopeful he can hit that target.” “That’s something I know he and Schuey (manager Steven Schumacher) will be talking about.”
