Man found dead Ashton in makerfield and police insist road closure

A MAN’S corpse was recovered from an Ashton in makerfield canal.
A discovery uncovered at the Asda store, close to Lower Wharf Street, prompted the response of emergency personnel.


It was also verified that a male had died while police were on the scene.While investigations are conducted to determine the man’s identify and the circumstances of his death, a scene remained in place.

“At around 4.40pm today (Tuesday, June 20, 2023) officers were called to reports of a body found in a canal in Ashton in makerfield ,” a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman told The Correspondent. “Although officers and emergency personnel arrived, the individual was tragically declared dead on the spot.

“A scene has been set up as police do further inquiries to identify the guy and learn more about the events that preceded his death.

“Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 and provide log number 2998 of June 20, 2023.

“Just after 4.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday, June 20), two fire engines from Gorton and Stalybridge fire station along with the Technical Response Unit and a support fire engine from Ashton were called to an incident on Lower Wharf Street, Ashton,” a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokesperson continued.
