VAR came back into conversation during Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa, following a controversial disallowed goal
Gary Lineker and Ian Wright both think that Arsenal’s goal against Aston Villa that was disallowed was “ridiculous” because VAR intervened because of a handball that led to the finish. That happened as the Gunners attempted to respond to a Villa team that had thrown themselves into the Premier League title contest.
Since joining the team, former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has done a great job leading the Villains—first guiding them into Europe and then out of relegation—before they have been on a current winning streak. Mikel Arteta received ample notice of the challenge his team would face thanks to a victory over Manchester City in the middle of the week.
They were behind early on after a goal from Scottish international John McGinn, who fired a shot past David Raya on the turn. The Gunners made an effort to counterattack, and they had a few near misses before finally seizing the moment in the end.
The ball eventually found the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble, seemingly capping another late comeback for the team, but VAR had a twist in store. Although there were objections to the ball hitting Matty Cash’s hand before the forward’s, Kai Havertz was found to have handled the ball prior to the finish.
The goal was chalked off and that was waved away, leaving the Gunners empty-handed from the match and out of first place. When questioned about the choice, Arteta just reiterated, “Clear and obvious,” as if he were unwilling to discuss the goal’s disallowance in any depth.
As the former stated on Match of the Day, “This is the moment for me, the ball is so close to everybody,” pundits Wright and Lineker thought the choice was puzzling. Although it has struck the hands of Matty Cash and Kai Havertz, the law states that “it cannot strike your hand anywhere if it leads to the goal and you score.” It’s the most absurd legislation.
Lineker expressed his confusion by saying, “Forwards cannot handball it accidentally; defenders can.” Why are we attempting to eliminate goals? the individuals who enact the rules of the game. Why are they acting in that way? It’s peculiar. prior to Wright saying, “It’s absurd.” Not just for football, but for all of law, this is the most absurd statute. Every law across the globe.”
