Aston Villa favourite Dwight Yorke is keen on succeeding Michael Beale at Championship outfit Sunderland.
Beale, who left Villa Park after just seven months to take over at Queens Park Rangers, was Steven Gerrard’s assistant. He was enticed to the Rangers five months later, and after less than a year at Ibrox, he was fired. Two months later, he made an appearance at the Stadium of Light.
The 43-year-old is unemployed once more. He played just 12 games for the Black Cats until his departure was made public on Monday, leaving a position that Yorke is now interested in.
Before joining Manchester United, the 52-year-old scored 98 goals in 287 games for Villa. He has long harboured ambitions to become a manager. He has won the Australia Cup with Macarthur FC, an A League team, during his one and only stint.
The Sunderland Echo reports that Yorke is amenable to going back to the team he played for. He is quoted as saying: “It would be great to return to Sunderland after playing for these clubs, but I wouldn’t rule out managing another EFL team.” I would have to approach the challenge with an open mind.
“Was I surprised at Michael Beale’s appointment?” Yorke asked in December, criticising Beale’s selection. I find it strange that people are granted second chances after missing out on something.
“He performed ok as an assistant at Villa. Did well at QPR before being fired from the Rangers and joining Sunderland. After a year, we have someone who is similar to him working three or four jobs. You’re just attempting to puzzle over how that operates and what the outcomes are.
