Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne tread disciplinary tightrope
Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne are treading a disciplinary tightrope as both players are one booking away from a one-game suspension.
The Villa duo have racked up four yellow cards each after the first seven Premier League games this season. Premier League players receive a one-match ban if they accumulate five yellow cards within the first 19 games of the campaign.
Yellow card bans will only be applied to Premier League matches and will not be carried over to any cup competition such as the Europa Conference League. Villa face Wolves, West Ham, Luton Town, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Tottenham in their next six league fixtures.
Digne has stepped up in Alex Moreno’s absence at the start of this campaign as the Spaniard continues to recover from a hamstring injury which he suffered back in May. Moreno had returned to the matchday squad against Crystal Palace, but did not travel with the squad to Stamford Bridge last month as Unai Emery claimed he is not 100 per cent comfortable to compete.
Luiz was voted as Villa’s player of the season last term and has continued his fine form in this season. He has featured in every game which Villa have played this term and became only the second player to score in five consecutive home Premier League appearances for the club, after Dwight Yorke in December 1996, by scoring Villa’s sixth goal in the 6-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Villa occupy fifth place after winning five of their first seven league games. Emery’s side go in search of their first Europa Conference League group stage win on Thursday against HSK Zrinjski Mostar, before travelling to Wolves on Sunday before the October international break comes.
