Financial difficulty to sign player – Club’s owners dragged into situation

Following a story from the Catalan media saying Vasco da Gama are interested in signing Philippe Coutinho from Aston Villa, it’s time for the Brazilian press to bring a response to it.

The midfielder is currently on loan at Al-Duhail, but the Rio de Janeiro club is thought to be interested in signing him in January.

ESPN Brasil was the first to respond to this story. They spoke with a close friend of Coutinho, who claimed to have just heard of a possible move to Vasco through the media.

Globo Esporte also bring some lines on the Aston Villa player, and they basically point out how hard that operation would be.

The story claims that in case Vasco start the chase, they’d need approval from their owners, 777 Partners, as the signing would require a big investment. It’s said his salary is the main obstacle, and club director Alexandre Mattos still didn’t start any contact about it.

Coutinho is loaned by Aston Villa until the end of the season. It’d be no surprise to see Unai Emery’s side trying to sell him, but it seems Vasco or any other Brazilian clubs would have difficulties affording him.
