Bryan Abreu of the Houston Astros has been suspended by Major League Baseball for the incident that occurred on Friday during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Abreu was given a two-game suspension by the league for throwing at Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia during the eighth inning. Since Abreu is anticipated to file an appeal, the punishment is probably not going to be implemented until the following season.
According to MLB’s ruling, Abreu threw towards Garcia on purpose during the eighth inning. That would be hotly contested by the Astros, who would argue that it would be utterly counterproductive to put a second runner on base in the late stages of a crucial ALCS game when they were already behind by two runs.
Garcia was obviously upset about the event and thought the Astros intentionally threw him off. Though the Astros would probably contend that Garcia was the one who initially exacerbated the entire situation, it appears the league agreed with him.
With a 1.75 ERA in 72 regular season games, Abreu has been maybe the finest reliever in the Astros bullpen all season.
