Barnsley FC Defender Agrees Championship Switch

Jordan Williams, a defender who is leaving Barnsley, is expected to advance to the Championship this summer as two teams compete for his services.

The 24-year-old left Oakwell when his contract with the League One team expired, but it appears he may move to the Championship as Cardiff City and Portsmouth, which was just promoted, are vying for his services.

Williams was a constant for Barnsley the previous season, filling in for captain Liam Kitching and loanee Bobby Thomas, who had both moved to Championship powerhouse Coventry City in the summer.

Williams participated in all 46 league games for Barnsley, with one goal and three assists. He also made six more appearances for the team in all cup competitions, adding one more assist for his team.

Williams’ time with the League One club came to an end with Barnsley’s play-off semi-final loss to Bolton Wanderers, and he is now seeking to start a new chapter in his professional career.

What assets would Williams bring to the Championship?

Williams has spent six years at Oakwell and has already made a name for himself in League One and the Championship despite only being 24 years old. During his time at Barnsley, he made over 200 appearances across all competitions. He also made appearances on loan for Bury and the current League One team, Huddersfield Town.

Williams was elevated to captain Barnsley for the balance of the 2023–24 season following Kitching’s departure on deadline day, which enabled him to guide his team into the play-off spots once more. At Oakwell, he has also played center back, right back, and right wing back, which will increase his versatility at either of his next stops.
