Barnsley have confirmed Darrell Clarke as their new manager as the Tykes gear up for another season in League One following their play-off heartache.
The Tykes have paid compensation to Cheltenham for the former Hartlepool and Mansfield midfielder who did an excellent job at the Robins last season despite relegation. Clarke has signed a two-year contract with the option of a third and takes over from Neill Collins, who was sacked before the end of the season.
Barnsley will be hoping he can promote them to the Championship after they missed out on a return to the second tier this season with defeat to Bolton in the playoffs as the Rams finished second in the table.
Clarke said: “I’m absolutely delighted, can’t wait to get started. I’m proud to be managing this football club, I’m really looking forward to it
“I didn’t need to be sold on the club, it’s got huge potential and I’m excited to get myself going and get the squad rebuilt and try to push on for a promotion challenge.”
Clarke will be assisted by Martin Devaney, who will be assistant head coach, and it remains to be seen if Conor Hourihane will be joining them at Oakwell.
The former captain of Derby, who was let go at the end of the campaign, was expected to become a member of the coaching staff at the team he led. Fans of Barnsley on social media are also hoping for his arrival soon.
Greetings from a fan in the town. Kindly declare Hourihane to be the coach and player. His background would be very beneficial.
Another added: “Announce Hourihane and I’ll renew.”
One Barnsley fan commented: “Fancy getting Hourihane as well?”
And one more rounded off by saying: “Bring us Hourihane and we will be content for a while.”
