Barnsley to bring back Conor Hourihane in a player-coaching role

Barnsley are in the hunt for a new permanent manager to replace Neill Collins following Martin Devaney’s spell in interim charge. Daniel Stendel has emerged as a leading contender to return to Oakwell ahead of next season.

Hourihane, 33, has a contract with Derby County that expires at the end of the following month. Since he hasn’t signed an extension, he will automatically become a free agent. Under Paul Warne, he has contributed to the Rams’ advancement to the championship.

He might, however, soon be heading out the exit door because his condition is still uncertain. According to the Yorkshire Post’s most recent report, Stendel and a second term with the Tykes could be in the works.

Barnsley linked with Derby County man

Hourihane would still be able to do a job as a player for Barnsley and shouldn’t hang up his boots just yet.

He made 47 appearances for Derby County in this past campaign and chipped in with six goals and nine assists.

The 36-cap veteran of the Republic of Ireland was a vital midfield player for the Tykes from 2014 to 2017. He was a member of the team from 2014 to 2017.

Under Plymouth Argyle, Hourihane scored 31 goals in 134 games while playing for the Yorkshire team, helping them advance to the second division.

Additionally, he has had stints with Sheffield United, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town, and Sunderland.

Regarding Stendel, he was fired after Barnsley’s dismal return to the Championship in 2019 despite having helped them get promoted.

Nevertheless, the German was a popular man among the supporters and has been coaching Hannover 96’s B team over recent times.

The 50-year-old has also worked as the number at Hannover in the past, as well as stints at Hearts and Nancy.

It is imperative that Barnsley resolve their management dilemma as quickly as possible to make sure they are prepared for the upcoming season.

Given that Stendel is already familiar with the team and what it takes to advance, bringing him back could be a wise decision.

For Hourihane, it might be the perfect chance to continue playing for a few more years while also delving into teaching and gaining some expertise in that area.
