Latest Derby County news from Derbyshire Live brings you what the Rams head coach had to say after the Rams fell to defeat at Oakwell
In their matchup with Barnsley, who are vying for promotion, Derby County lost, and Paul Warne thought a draw was “possibly” a fair outcome.
Sonny Bradley headed in Conor Hourihane’s corner to score the opening goal of the game, giving the Rams the lead early in the first half. However, Adam Phillips gave Barnsley the lead with a rocket goal just before halftime and then again with a flick in a corner at the near post.
In stoppage time, Derby made a valiant effort to equalise but was unable to create a serious opportunity. Derby’s head coach Warne added after the game, “It was a disappointing end.” I didn’t think we were playing at our best in the first half. We didn’t seem to have enough character on the ball, and Barnsley deserves credit for being a youthful team. The custodian on their team was the oldest player at 29 years old.
They merely followed us and had young, fit athletes. They didn’t give us any time with the ball, and when you don’t pick the pass early on and have less time, you just throw it away.
But other than a screaming 30-yarder, my goalie had little work to do. We were solid defensively, but moving forward you lose something. That was the sensation.
“Although Nat Mendez-Laing is graciously playing for us despite not being a natural nine, our game lacked a natural flow. We looked good in the second half, but they scored horribly from a set-piece.
But the lads gave everything they could right until the end. I can’t knock their character. But we didn’t create enough gilt-edged chances. It felt like a playoff game really and I think most people would agree a draw would have possibly been a fair result.”
