Barrow AFC confirm talks

We’re delighted to announce the signing of Defender, Sam Barnes from Blackburn Rovers following the expiration of his contract at Ewood Park.

The 23-year-old signed a one-year contract at the SO Legal Stadium, but we have the option to extend it for an additional year.

for the signing of Connor Mahoney earlier this afternoon, he becomes the second former Blackburn player to sign for Barrow this afternoon.

Having grown through the youth levels to the first team, where he made his debut during a Carabao Cup triumph over Walsall last season, Barnes has spent 12 years with the club where he spent his formative years.
He has even been included in Rovers’ Championship Matchday roster. Barnes has shown to be a highly good player, but because of thigh and ACL injuries, he has only made one first-team appearance.

Sam is known for his ball-playing ability but isn’t afraid of a physical battle as proven by his loan spell at non-league side, Marine FC while he was only 17 years old.

Speaking about his abilities, Sam said: “I like to think of myself as a ball-playing centre-back, I love playing passes through the lines, but I also like to get stuck in and win headers and be a leader on the pitch.”

Signing for Barrow brings to an end Barnes’ 12-year affiliation with his boyhood club, but he’s relishing the chance to join the Bluebirds.

He added: “I think it’s the right time in my career to make a fresh start and it’s the perfect club for me to make this fresh start at. After speaking to Iain and the rest of the staff here the aim is to be pushing higher up the league and I’m really excited to be a part of that.

“I’m really happy to be here, I think it’s a fantastic club to sign for and it’s a club that I’ve followed closely for the last couple of seasons with a few of my mates playing here, but I’m really excited to get it over the line.”
