When police arrived at the residence on Whitletts Road in the town on Saturday afternoon, they discovered a woman dead inside.
A 70-year-old man has since been taken into custody and the death is still being investigated as unexplained.
There are still officers present, and investigations are continuing.
A representative for officers Scotland stated: “On Saturday, March 2, at around 4:45 p.m., officers were called to an address on Whitletts Road, Ayr, in response to an allegation of a disturbance.
“A woman was discovered dead inside the house upon the arrival of the police.
Her death is still being investigated as unexplained while a postmortem is conducted.
“A 70-year-old man was taken into custody after the event.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, and officers are still present at the scene.”
