Birmingham City faces tough battle in race to sign playmaker

Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City are both in the race to sign Leeds United man Ian Poveda ahead of the summer

Poveda’s Elland Road contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and it appears that he will be leaving West Yorkshire at that point.

The attacker does have EFL loan experience at his disposal, though.

Despite not being able to start playing regularly at Blackburn Rovers and spending most of his time on the sidelines at Ewood Park, he has made appearances on loan for Blackpool and the Owls.

He is looking to contribute significantly to the South Yorkshire club’s continued success in the division while on loan at the latter side. Under Danny Rohl, he has performed admirably thus far.

Despite making just seven games for the Owls and only managing one assist, he has received acclaim on occasion and might end up being a wise permanent addition.

It is unclear, though, if the team will stay in the Championship, and that could be crucial to their ability to complete a deal for the Colombian international.

Latest on Ian Poveda’s future

TEAMtalk has verified that Poveda has already played his final game for Leeds because the Whites will not extend his contract when it expires at the end of the current one.

Leeds will be frustrated that he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a vital member of the first team at Elland Road, but it appears likely that if he went back to West Yorkshire and stayed there for the 2024–2025 season, he wouldn’t get much playing time.

It goes without saying that Poveda’s current loan team might be his long-term home when his contract expires, and Birmingham is reportedly interested as well.

Given that Blues manager Mowbray previously disclosed the team’s interest in the player in January, the team’s interest is not surprising.
