Birmingham City plotting summer transfer swoop for Celtic star

The 21-year-old joined the Scottish champions in 2023 from Watford, and spent his first year at the club with the B team, where he predominantly played centre-back.

A loan move to Fleetwood Town was sorted last season, and whilst the Cod Army were relegated, Lawal flourished, particularly when moved into a midfield role.

He scored six goals for the side, and impressed with his power and his quality on the ball as he would drive forward.

Birmingham City interested in Bosun Lawal

Consequently, some Celtic fans believe that Lawal ought to get an opportunity to challenge for a starting spot in the first team this season under Brendan Rodgers, and the manager of the Hoops did commend the player following his performance in their Friday night friendly against Ayr.

But with players like Callum McGregor, Tomoki Iwata, Reo Hatate, and Matt O’Riley now ahead of him in the midfield hierarchy, it will still be difficult for Lawal to break into the starting lineup.

So, another move can’t be ruled out just yet, and the Daily Record has revealed that Blues are lining up a move for Lawal, with Dutch side Fortuna Sittard also monitoring the situation.

Bosun Lawal could flourish at Birmingham City

Naturally, Chris Davies, the new manager of Birmingham, is familiar with Celtic, having worked with Rodgers at the club in the past. In fact, he has coached the Northern Irishman for the most of his coaching career.

You can be certain that he is aware of Lawal’s abilities through Rodgers and the club’s assessment of him, even if he wasn’t with the Glasgow giants when Lawal was recruited.

Birmingham would consider it a huge victory if they could secure Lawal’s transfer or permanent status at St. Andrew’s.

Lawal was a bright spot on a subpar Fleetwood squad the previous season, and his League One experience gives him a greater understanding of the level. Given that the team is expected to battle for promotion, you would expect Lawal to improve even further.

Lawal is a young, exciting player who will contribute to the high-intensity football that Davies is seeking to introduce, so he would also suit the profile of the kind of acquisition Blues are looking to make.

Birmingham City’s summer transfer plans

You would expect this potential deal to drag on, as several Celtic players are not yet back for pre-season, and Rodgers will want to use the next few weeks to make a decision on the youngster.

However, it once again demonstrates Blues’ aspirations for the summer, and supporters will be happy with how the window is unfolding. The club has already made some striking acquisitions, most notably Emil Hansson and Alfie May, who will infuse the team with creativity and goals.

Even if there is still more to be done, Davies is making progress in assembling a strong squad with the goal of returning Birmingham to the Championship on the first try.
