Birmingham City have opened talks to sign Blackburn Rovers striker Sam Gallagher this month, sources have told Football Insider.
Blues boss Tony Mowbray has made a new striker a top priority in January and has set his sights on the 28-year-old.
Birmingham are currently working on a loan deal to bring Gallagher to St Andrew’s Stadium for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
Discussions are currently at an early stage as Mowbray looks to secure his second signing since taking over at Birmingham.
As revealed by Football Insider, Mowbray’s first Birmingham City signing was Andre Dozzell after a deal was agreed to sign the QPR star.
Mowbray was hired by the Blues last Monday (8 January) to replace Wayne Rooney following his sacking.
The 60-year-old’s first game in charge of the Championship side saw Birmingham draw 2-2 with Swansea last Saturday.
Despite picking up a point, Birmingham remain 20th in the Championship table with just 32 goals scored in 27 games.
Mowbray will hope that Gallagher’s arrival will add more depth and firepower to his striker department for the second half of the season.
The Rovers striker has scored twice in seven appearances this season but has struggled for game time under Jon Dahl Tomasson.
