John Eustace’s stance on Birmingham City return emerges:

The 44-year-old only left the Blues in October

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  John Eustace is open to returning as Birmingham City manager after his previous successful period with the club.
  •  Birmingham has struggled since replacing Eustace with Rooney, slipping down the Championship table following that change.
  •  Rooney has now been sacked by the Blues, meaning they are now searching for a new manager, who could come in the form of Eustace.

John Eustace is open to returning to Birmingham City to replace Wayne Rooney as the club’s manager.

That’s according to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse, who does however point out that the Blues themselves would also need to be open to such a reunion.

Eustace a success as Birmingham manager

It was a largely successful period that Eustace enjoyed as Birmingham manager, after being appointed to succeed Lee Bowyer in the role in the summer of 2022.

The 2022/23 campaign saw Eustace guide the club to a 17th place finish in the Championship table, despite being among the favourites for relegation.

That was something they looked to be building on under the 44-year-old, with the Blues having been sat fifth in the second-tier standings following a 3-1 win over West Brom, going into this season’s October international break.

However, it was at that point that, to the surprise of many, Birmingham elected to sack Eustace, bringing Wayne Rooney to St Andrew’s as his successor.

Now though, it looks as though the Midlands club will soon once again be on hunt for a new manager.

Rooney set to be sacked by Birmingham

It has been a disastrous period for Birmingham since they appointed Rooney to take over from Eustace at the club.

Of the 15 games they have played since that managerial change, they have won just two, while suffering defeat on nine occasions.

That is a run that has seen them slide all the way down to 20th in the Championship table, and they are now just six points clear of the relegation zone.

As a result, has now been confirmed that Birmingham have indeed sacked Rooney, and it seems his immediate predecessor, could be in contention to succeed him at St Andrew’s.

Eustace open to swift Birmingham City return

With the Blues now on the hunt for a new manager, they may have the option of turning to a familiar face, should they wish to do so.

According to this latest update from Collomosse, Eustace would be open to a return to Birmingham, if the club were interested in bringing him back to the Midlands as well.

A separate report from The Daily Mirror has noted that the 44-year-old could be an option for the Blues, as he is still technically under contract at St Andrew’s, having not taken another job since leaving the club.

As a result, it would not cost the club anything, to re-appoint Eustace as Birmingham manager.

Birmingham should pay attention to Eustace’s interest in St Andrew’s return

It would surely be a sensible move for Birmingham to look into bringing Eustace back to the club.

This is still the same squad of players that he had got to fifth in the Championship table, in the early stages of this season.
