Before their match against Sheffield Wednesday, Wayne Rooney sent a message to his teammates, according to the most recent Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive.
When Birmingham City plays Sheffield Wednesday today, who are currently at the bottom of the table, Wayne Rooney has cautioned his teammates not to get complacent.
With just six points from their first 16 games, the Owls are an ideal opponent on paper, but the Blues are still looking for their first win under Rooney. Although Hillsborough’s performance hasn’t improved under new manager Danny Rohl, they have outperformed Blues in their last five games.
After five games, Rooney has presided over four losses, and he bemoaned his lack of focus during the team’s most recent 3-1 loss to Sunderland. The Blues manager is anxious to prevent disappointment and a repeat performance at St Andrew’s.
“This is a game where concentration and focus are crucial,” he remarked. “You have to have such high concentration levels. Each squad in this league is capable of defeating the other teams, and each match in this league is intense. But if you lack that focus, you could make things much harder on yourself.
“We believe we have a strong chance to win and score three points in this game. But we have to throw everything at it.
Rooney gave his players some time off during the international break so they could recuperate before the season’s busiest fixture schedule. The Blues have ten Championship games before January 2; the next international break is four months away.
“I gave the players a few days off alongside a programme to work them physically,” the 38-year-old continued. We need to improve our physical condition in order to play the way I want to, as I’ve been stating for the past few weeks. We have kept an eye on the players’ work during their days off and have increased training this week.
“Training has gone really well this week in terms of physical fitness. I’m really enjoying what the players are doing. Their physical output has improved significantly. Even without the ball, we have been getting better. This week has been much better with the ball.
Points on the board for short-term improvement, but Rooney and the Blues’ new owners, Knighthead, have bigger plans. Their grand plan is to get Blues back into the Premier League.
The owners and I have ambitions, and we don’t plan on changing them. We are aware of our destination. It was obvious to the owners and me that nothing would change in five games. It will require some time.
