Wayne Rooney has called out the unacceptable chant he heard at City’s defeat’

On Monday afternoon, Rooney’s men travelled to Elland Road looking to kickstart their season.

However, it was another afternoon to forget for the Blues as they fell to a 3-0 defeat thanks to goals from Patrick Bamford, Dan James and Crysencio Summerville.

During the match, multiple chants were directed at underfire Birmingham boss Rooney, who has now suffered his ninth defeat in 15 matches.

During the game, away fans directed a burtal chant at the former Manchester United and England forward.

Rooney mentioned one particular chant that he didn’t like after the game.

According to Leeds Live columnist Beren Cross, “Rooney on today’s chants.”The only chant I didn’t like was the Jimmy Saville one. That didn’t sit well with me.”

Cross later added, “As many fans are pointing out, it’s hard to recall any Saville chants from the home support today.”

Rooney said during his post-match press conference: “Not the result we wanted. Knew it was going to be a tough game. Started well until the first goal. Caused them problems in transition. Not clinical enough with the opportunities we had.

“First goal big difference to the game. Changed the system with three CBs. Cannot leave Bamford free in the six-yard box because he will punish you.”

He added: “I am a fighter and I get football is about opinions. Only chant I did not appreciate was the Jimmy Saville on. Didn’t feel that was acceptable.”

On the back of the defeat by Leeds, Birmingham are now 20th in the Championship table, seven points above the relegation zone.

Birmingham will be back in action this weekend when they take on fellow Championship side Hull City in the third round of the FA Cup.
