The officials assigned to supervise Sunderland’s Boxing Day visit to Blackburn Rovers have been revealed by the EFL.
When Sunderland travels to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day as part of their festive match schedule, it will be a major test of their promotion credentials.
The Black Cats will enter Ewood Park with high spirits after defeating Swansea City and Norwich City back-to-back over the past two weeks to extend their winning streak to four games. After losing just three of their 11 away games in the first half of the league season, Regis Le Bris’ team is also hoping to maintain the third-best away record in the Championship against the former Premier League champions.
The Black Cats have the advantage of having a six-point lead over Rovers, which means they will stay in fourth place in the table if they can avoid losing to a team that has won seven of their ten home games this season. However, Sunderland and their hosts are only one spot apart going into the match.
Following the announcement of Robert Madley as the game’s referee, the EFL has announced a well-known official for a match that might be crucial in the competition for promotion into the Premier League. Just over ten years ago, the 39-year-old managed his first Premier League match, dismissing three players during Southampton vs. West Bromwich Albion. His performances resulted in the Wakefield-born whistler being elevated to the Select Group Referee panel a few months later. However, he resigned from officiating in England in August 2018 after disclosing that he had been fired for making a video in which he seemed to make fun of a disabled person.
