Bohemians are evaluating a six-figure offer for Jonathan Afolabi, who is tied for the league lead in scoring, from a Championship outfit.
The Dubliner scored in Sunday’s FAI Cup final loss to St Patrick’s Athletic, but his play has drawn attention from across the pond, and this week an unidentified Championship team submitted an official proposal of €250,000. Bohs are awaiting any competing bids and have not yet publicly rejected the offer.
After stints at Southampton and Celtic, Afolabi joined Bohs last year. Although his first season was difficult, he went on to dominate the league this season, even though he had a slow start. He finished with 15 goals, sharing the Golden Boot award with Jack Moylan, who has since left Shelbourne for Lincoln City. The former U21 captain was also called up to the senior Ireland squad last month due to his performance.
Bohs is also anticipating new bids for James McManus, a midfield player who drew interest from the Premier League last summer but was turned down by the team.
Although the club’s finances are sound, a sale of Afolabi would provide the organization room to rebuild for the upcoming season in the event that they are unable to qualify for Europe due to their sixth-place league finish and Cup final loss.
While Georgie Kelly went on a free transfer, Bohs have made money in recent seasons from the cross-channel sales of Promise Omochere, Dawson Devoy, and Ross Tierney.
