Ian Evatt says that his extremely competitive midfield ranks are causing him some selection headaches, especially after the important Dempsey returned from a seven-game absence due to a back fracture.
The Wanderers manager has hinted that he will rest some of the players who started against Oxford on Tuesday night in order to keep his entire squad fresh.
Dempsey has impressed in two substitute appearances since his return and is in Evatt’s plans for the second round match against Harrogate.
“Kyle is pushing hard,” he commented. “I have 20 players vying for a spot in the starting lineup, but that area of the field in particular is incredibly strong.” We have Josh Sheehan, Paris Maghoma, and George Thomason who are playing incredibly well right now, but there’s also Aaron Morley, Kyle Dempsey, and Carlos Mendes Gomes – it’s a vast amount of skill and I am fortunate to have them all. Keeping them happy is difficult, but I believe that when you are achieving results and the team is performing properly, it becomes simpler.
“They understand that they will all be needed if we are to meet our objectives, and the team must be supportive of whoever is on the side.” Whatever three I choose from those six, I’m confident they’ll be suitable for purpose and accomplish the job right.”
Evatt also praised goalie coach Matt Gilks for the progress that summer addition Nathan Baxter has made since joining the club.
The former Chelsea custodian was part of a defence that set a club record with seven consecutive clean sheets on Tuesday night, a mark that might be broken today afternoon if the squad beats Harrogate.
“Gillo’s work with Nathan has been exceptional but he is still a young goalkeeper who is improving and I have seen huge progress in his goalkeeping and his possession stuff this season, and there is more to come as well,” Evatt added.
“Matt Gilks deserves some credit because he has been fantastic with not only Nathan but James (Trafford) before him as well, and the other goalkeepers, we are fortunate to have them.”
