After experiencing a heart arrest while cheering for Bolton Wanderers, Iain Purslow, 71, passed away.

Bolton Wanderers have paid tribute to a passionate fan who fell during a match against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

At the Lancashire club’s home stadium, Iain Purslow, 71, was supporting his son Stuart and the Whites when he passed out during the first half, possibly from a heart arrest.

Mr. Purslow, an Oldham resident, was taken to the hospital by medical personnel and paramedics, where he tragically passed away after receiving CPR.

“Bolton Wanderers is deeply saddened to confirm that the fan taken ill at yesterday afternoon’s home fixture against Cheltenham Town has passed away,” the club said in a statement.

“At this deeply sad time, everyone associated with Bolton Wanderers is sending their condolences to Iain’s family and loved ones.”

Thirty minutes after the players were removed from the field, the match was cancelled in accordance with the referee, just after 4 p.m. The club says the rescheduling of the game will happen eventually.

In a heartfelt remembrance, a fan club wrote on Facebook, “Rest in peace Iain Purslow once a wanderer always a wanderer.”

“I worked with Iain for about 10 years. He was a Wanderer through and through and a cracking laugh. RIP, friend,” Geoff Parker continued.

The club reports that Phil Mason, its chaplain, is offering support to those affected by the tragedy as well as family members.

The FA-Cup home game against Luton Town on Tuesday night is open to supporters honouring the devoted lifelong fan.

In commemoration of Mr. Purslow’s age, a fan has requested applause in the 71st minute in his remembrance.

“Everyone at Cheltenham Town is with Iain’s family, loved ones, and the Bolton Wanderers community at this deeply sad time,” a statement from the team stated.

“The club also wants to express its gratitude to the visiting fans for their cooperation and understanding in the wake of the upsetting event.
