Ex-Bolton man makes surprise to Liverpool

Former Wanderers midfielder Jay Spearing made a surprise appearance for Liverpool Under-21s in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy last night.

In the summer of 2012, Spearing moved permanently to the Whites after first joining on loan from the Reds.

After spending five years at Bolton, the midfield player made 173 appearances and scored eight goals overall.

Spearing had spells at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, and Tranmere after leaving Wanderers.

The 34-year-old came back to Anfield in 2018 to assist in the development of the team’s young players in a player-coach capacity.

He played an hour in the middle of the pitch during the opening half of last night’s 2-1 loss to Barrow before giving way to Tommy Pilling at Holker Street.

Despite the outcome, Liverpool’s youth still have a chance to go to the next round of competition, provided that Blackpool’s match against Morecambe goes well the following week.

“Anytime I can get out on the pitch, get my boots back on, and help the boys out, it’s an absolute pleasure and it’s good fun,” Spearing said earlier this season, according to the official club website.

Playing for the U21s or on the training pitch is still enjoyable for me, and it’s part of my job description. Thus far, the experience has been quite delightful.

The midfield player talked about a health concern that about a year ago resulted in his diagnosis of Addison’s disease.

Spearing disclosed that prior to his body “starting shutting down” and experiencing a “adrenal crisis,” he underwent blood testing and was sent to the hospital immediately.

Fortunately, the ailment is treatable, and the 34-year-old vowed not to let it “affect or dictate my life”.
