Ian Evatt has urged Wanderers to give it another shot after his team lost out on setting a new club record for the most straight clean sheets.
A nearly 12-hour streak without a goal conceded was broken by George Thomson’s consolation goal for Harrogate, tying the Whites with their all-time record from 1900.
Although Evatt was disappointed that his team couldn’t take home the record, he still believes that they can break more records this year.
He remarked, “It is unfortunate, but we’ll go again.” “Even though Nathan (Baxter) is the goalie and is given credit for the clean sheets, I feel a little sorry for everyone because it has always been a team effort.”
“We’d worked so hard to own that record, and it wasn’t just the mistake for the goal—there were two or three that went wrong before it, too,” I stated at halftime. Our lessons were not learned.
“We want to get better, and I guess sometimes you have to learn the hard way. However, we must now pursue those spotless records once more and start the process.
Despite adding first team regulars Josh Sheehan, Dion Charles, and Victor Adeboyejo, Wanderers were 5-1 ahead with over 30 minutes remaining in the match and were unable to score any more goals.
The game’s tempo drastically decreased after it became clear who would win, and Evatt acknowledged that the last few minutes of play were pretty boring.
“It is difficult because, as we saw against Exeter, it is difficult to maintain that mentality when you are up 5-1,” he said.
It is really difficult for them to do what I am asking of them on a regular basis. The calibre of that team should not be undervalued, and when you win games 5-1 but are nevertheless somewhat let down, it speaks volumes about the state of our team.
“Let’s accept that and put in a lot of effort to get better.”
Zac Ashworth was able to enter the game in the second half for Wanderers, making his first appearance since October 7.
The West Brom defender, who is currently on loan, has missed the majority of the previous two months due to a calf injury he sustained while playing for his country.
As the team moves into the busiest period of the football season, Evatt is pleased to see Ashworth join other players on the comeback trail.
He remarked, “I’m glad for Zac because he’s had a difficult time with injuries.” He has been somewhat hard on himself because, prior to coming here, he had an excellent injury record.
“He’s not had the best of luck, but we believe he is
“It was fantastic for him to return to action, and it was also great for Carlos Mendes Gomes and Kyle Dempsey to get some playing time. They also performed admirably.
“There were some positives, but we now have extremely high expectations, and we must make sure that we meet them as frequently as possible.”
